Every recommendation comes from genuine experience. If I mention a piece of gear, it’s because it’s earned its place in my rig or my respect. If I suggest a technique, it’s because I’ve used it on stages and in studios around the world.
I’ve spent my career pushing boundaries – not for the sake of showing off, but because music demanded it. When I started playing with Joe Satriani in the mid-1980s, instrumental rock was opening up new possibilities for every instrument, including bass. Instead of just holding down the bottom, bass could carry melodies, tell stories, and take listeners on journeys.
The Highlights
My path led through Berklee College of Music, but my real education came from playing with anyone who would have me. The breakthrough came with Joe Satriani – suddenly I was playing arenas and developing the two-handed tapping techniques that would become my signature.
Career milestones:
Toured extensively with Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, recorded on landmark albums including “Surfing with the Alien,” released multiple solo albums, and recently completed “Hold Fast” – a prog-rock exploration that proves I’m still finding new musical territories.
Why I Do This
Music isn’t about showing off – it’s about serving the song and connecting with listeners. Technical ability is just a tool for creating something meaningful. That philosophy guides everything on this site: no marketing fluff, just what actually works and what actually matters.
Music has been incredibly generous to me. It’s taken me around the world, introduced me to incredible people, and allowed me to make a living doing what I love. This website is my way of giving back – sharing what I’ve learned with anyone who’s interested.
